$165M EXPANSION UNDERWAY AT ADELAIDE AIRPORT
Adelaide’s ongoing transformation has extended to the Adelaide Airport, with a $165M expansion underway and earmarked for completion in 2021. It will enhance the visitor experience with a significant upgrade of the international terminal. The expansion comes as the new Atura Adelaide Airport hotel prepares to open, and Adelaide’s airlift into Asia continues to grow.
Announced in mid-June with work commencing immediately, Adelaide’s airport expansion is set to enhance the visitor experience with a significant upgrade of international arrivals along with the addition of more retail and dining options.
A key focus of the expansion is on improving the arrivals and departures experience for international passengers. As shared in a press release, “international upgrades will include a second, longer baggage belt for arrivals, more space for emigration and immigration processing, expanded security screening, a larger duty free precinct for arrivals and departures, and expanded dining and retail options.”
In total, the project is set to expand the terminal by 16,500sqm, with the facility’s total retail footprint set to increase by more than 80 percent. The expansion represents the airport’s biggest infrastructure project since its existing terminal opened in 2005.
“Without doubt, one of Adelaide’s convention advantages is our city’s incredible accessibility,” comments Simon Burgess, General Manager, Adelaide Convention Centre. “Our flight network currently includes one-stop connections to 300 destinations around the world. The airport expansion is particularly exciting news for delegates travelling to Adelaide for international conferences and will help deliver an even better first impression of our destination.”
The airport expansion comes as Adelaide’s airlift into Asia continues to grow and the precinct prepares to welcome the contemporary Atura Adelaide Airport.
Earlier this year, Malaysia Airlines announced a fifth weekly service between Adelaide and Kuala Lumpur, which commenced in July. More recently, China Southern Airlines announced it will increase its services between Guangzhou and Adelaide over peak periods, with the airline operating five flights per week on an ongoing basis from late February 2019.
The new Atura Adelaide Airport hotel is on track to open 1 September, 2018, and will feature 165 rooms, along with a restaurant and bar. A walkway will directly link the hotel to the airport’s Level 2 domestic and international check-in areas.
