Adelaide Convention Centre turns pink for breast cancer:
Monday, 27 October 2008

Adelaide Convention Centre turned a spectacular shade of pink during October to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The gigantic curved, glassed wall along the River Torrens was illuminated pink over three consecutive nights to coincide with a major breast cancer fundraising event held at the Centre, the Pink Ribbon Ball.

Organised by the Flinders Medical Centre which boasts some of the world's leading cancer researchers, the ball attracted 750 guests who were entertained by well-known Australian singer Vanessa Amorosi.

About $175,000 was expected to be raised through the event.

Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said the Centre was delighted to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the activities of the Flinders Medical Centre.

"This is an example of one of the many ways we are supporting the community," he said.

Just recently, the Centre began a project to help feed thousands of hungry South Australians by donating unused food through a new partnership with Foodbank SA, the State's largest hunger-relief organisation. In the first pickup of freshly prepared, frozen food, enough soup and casseroles to feed 1250 people was donated.

Other initiatives include donating superseded uniforms to charity and providing in-kind support to various events.

"Our reputation as a responsible corporate citizen is continuing to grow through these types of initiatives and projects underpinned by our Gold Service, Green Attitude philosophy," Mr Gilbert said.

"A raft of measures have been introduced under this philosophy including the establishment of a worm farm which digests up to 350kg of organic waste a week, a new drought-tolerant garden and the introduction of Go for Green conference packages that allow convention organisers to both reduce and offset carbon emissions caused by their event.

"And just recently in a South Australian first, Adelaide Convention Centre became part of the international Green Globe community recognised for our commitment and leadership in sustainable environmental practices."
