Adelaide Convention Centre sets Green Globe first for SA:
Friday, 24 October 2008

In a South Australian first, Adelaide Convention Centre has become part of the international Green Globe community recognised for its commitment and leadership in sustainable environmental practices.

With four of its indicators achieving "at or above best practice", it is the first South Australian based organisation to pass the rigorous Earthcheck Benchmarking Indicators set by Green Globe and joins a select group of companies across the globe.

"This has been a difficult but rewarding process that provides our clients with the confidence they are partnering with an organisation that is committed to sustainable and responsible environmental practices," Chief Executive Alec Gilbert says.

"We have always known that our initiatives underpinned by our Gold Service, Green Attitude philosophy are world class and now we have an independent, international organisation that, following a rigorous program of checks and balances, has confirmed this."

Eight out of ten assessed Earthcheck indicators were above baseline levels while Green Globe commended the Centre for achieving best practice results for its water saving, waste recycling, paper products and cleaning products.

In other good news for the environment:

  • Adelaide Convention Centre's waste management plan is to be adopted by Zero Waste SA as a best practice case study and used as the basis in a Guideline for Event Organisers;
  • A benchmark carbon audit has been completed providing the Centre with a tool for measuring future reductions in carbon emissions.

"Green Globe recognition is just the start and not the end for us. We are determined to continue to set new benchmarks and maintain and improve performance in all of the Earthcheck indicators assessed," Mr Gilbert said.

Earlier this year, Adelaide Convention Centre became the first convention centre in Australia to offer Go for Green conference packages that help conference organisers reduce the carbon footprint of events and it received international attention when it established a worm farm to munch through up to 350kg of organic waste each week.

 "When you consider our outstanding levels of professionalism and service and our commitment to the environment, it's no wonder that Adelaide is regarded as Australia's convention city," Mr Gilbert said.
