A fantastic new events space has been created right in the heart of the City. Located in front of the Adelaide Convention Centre on the bank of the Torrens Lake, the new Elder Park Event Space offers a year-round venue for events and festivals in the City.
Approximately 15,000 tonnes of soil have been removed and about 5000 square metres of turf laid to create one of Adelaide's largest flat outdoor event areas.
With the City skyline and Torrens Lake in the background, the space offers a unique setting for events of all kinds, and adds value to the City's busy festival calendar.
Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the new area provides a space where large events can be held with all the convenience of being right the City.
"Adelaide has a world-wide reputation for its range of events and festivals, and having a permanent setting in Elder Park offers event organisers and participants a uniquely Adelaide experience."
"Attracting more visitors to Elder Park will showcase the Riverbank Precinct as a whole with the great views and the direct pedestrian link between North Terrace and the Torrens an extra drawcard."
Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert is delighted with the space, which was funded in the main by the State Government. He stated that it would greatly assist in attracting large international and interstate conferences to the City. Already one major conference of 1,200 delegates had been secured as a result of its development.
"This space enhances existing infrastructure and offers event organisers a beautiful and practical space on the bank of the Torrens that will be invaluable for upcoming events and festivals."
"Adelaide Convention Centre and Council have developed protocol to ensure the space is well managed and we look forward to implementing that protocol over this busy event season."
The first use of the New Events Space will be as the Games Village for the World Police and Fire Games which start later this week.
