The Adelaide Convention Centre has defied a downturn in travel and convention business, recording a record turnover.
Its 2003 annual review, released yesterday, shows turnover of the North Terrace centre has doubled in the past two years to reach $19.963 million.
Centre chief executive Pieter van der Hoeven said a lot more was spent by visiting delegates in accommodaton, meals, shopping and touring. He said the centre's financial result was "achieved against a climate of unrest and in a period of general downturn in the convention business."
"Since our extension was announced then completed in 2001, our turnover has doubled.
"This year's is $3.8 million more than last year which in turn was $6.1 million more than the year before.
"For a single three-month period (in the past year) we achieved as many international bookings as we would normally have recorded in a full year.'
